There are various methods for classifying rolls, primarily including: (1) by product type (e.g., strip rolls, section steel rolls, wire rod rolls); (2) by position in the rolling mill train (e.g., blooming rolls, roughing rolls, finishing rolls); (3) by function (e.g., scale-breaking rolls, piercing rolls, skin-pass rolls); (4) by material (e.g., steel rolls, cast iron rolls, cemented carbide rolls, ceramic rolls); (5) by manufacturing method (e.g., cast rolls, forged rolls, hard-faced rolls, sleeved rolls); and (6) by the state of the rolled steel (e.g., hot-rolling rolls, cold-rolling rolls).
These classification categories can be combined to provide a more specific description of a roll-for example, a centrifugally cast high-chromium cast iron work roll for hot-rolled strip.
