Diamond Drawing Dies

Diamond Drawing Dies
Product Introduction:
Diamond Wire Drawing Dies use a diamond-based working insert to control the reduction and final dimensions of metal wire during drawing. Depending on the wire material, diameter range and drawing conditions, the working element can be made from natural diamond, synthetic single-crystal diamond or polycrystalline diamond (PCD). These configurations are used across fine-wire, non-ferrous and other wire drawing processes.

Selecting the Diamond Material

The term Diamond Wire Drawing Die does not identify one specific die material. The working material should be selected according to the actual wire and production conditions.

Working Material

Typical Selection Consideration

Natural Diamond

Fine and ultra-fine wire, surface-sensitive applications

Synthetic Single-Crystal Diamond

Fine wire requiring a single-crystal working surface

PCD

Non-ferrous and other applications requiring a polycrystalline diamond working insert

Natural and synthetic single-crystal dies are used for fine and ultra-fine applications, while PCD dies cover a broader range of wire drawing applications, including larger diameters.

Working Conditions

Natural diamond, synthetic single-crystal diamond or PCD working insert
Round and shaped wire drawing configurations
Controlled die bore and bearing geometry
Available for fine, ultra-fine and larger wire sizes depending on die material

Suitable for copper, aluminum, precious-metal and selected alloy wires
Dry and wet drawing configurations
Custom inlet, outlet and external die dimensions
Available for new dies and die recutting where applicable

What Is a Diamond Wire Drawing Die?

A Diamond Wire Drawing Die is a forming tool in which the working bore is made from a diamond-based material.
The die does not remove metal from the wire. Instead, the wire is pulled through a smaller opening and undergoes plastic deformation. The reduction zone controls the change in cross-sectional area, while the bearing section defines the output dimension of the drawing pass.
Diamond is used as the working material because the die bore is subjected to continuous sliding contact with the wire. The selected diamond type determines the appropriate operating range and application.

Diamond Die Structure

A typical diamond wire drawing die consists of a diamond working insert, support body and precision-finished bore.

Working Insert

The working insert is the part directly contacting the wire. Three main diamond configurations are used in wire drawing:

Natural Diamond (ND)

A natural single-crystal diamond is used as the working element. It is commonly associated with fine and ultra-fine wire applications where bore finish and wire surface condition are important.

01

Synthetic Single-Crystal Diamond (SSCD)

A synthetic single-crystal diamond is used where a single-crystal working surface is required. It is used for fine and ultra-fine wire applications with controlled diameter and surface requirements.

02

Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD)

PCD consists of multiple diamond grains in a polycrystalline structure. PCD dies are used for both ferrous and non-ferrous wire drawing and are available for dry and wet drawing processes.

03

Support Body

The support body retains the diamond insert and provides the external dimensions required for installation in the drawing machine or die holder.

04

Drawing Bore

The internal bore normally contains an approach zone, reduction zone, bearing zone and exit zone.

The bearing section is the part that directly defines the final dimension of the drawing pass.

How Diamond Wire Drawing Dies Work

The drawing machine applies tensile force to the wire and pulls it through the die opening.
When the wire enters the reduction zone, the available cross-sectional area decreases. The material flows plastically through the smaller opening, increasing in length while reducing in section.
The bearing section then establishes the final dimension of that pass.
For multi-pass drawing, several dies are arranged in sequence. Each die produces an intermediate dimension before the wire enters the next die.
The total reduction is therefore distributed across multiple drawing stages instead of being assigned to a single die.

Working Conditions

Dry Drawing

In dry drawing, lubricant is supplied to the wire-die contact area through a dry lubrication system. The die geometry must be matched to the wire material, reduction and lubrication conditions.

Wet Drawing

In wet drawing, the wire and die operate with liquid drawing lubricant. The lubricant also affects friction and heat removal at the drawing interface.
PCD diamond dies are specifically offered for wet and dry wire drawing processes.

Fine Wire Drawing

Fine-wire drawing places greater emphasis on bore diameter, bearing geometry, surface finish and dimensional tolerance. Single-crystal diamond dies are commonly used for fine and ultra-fine applications.

Non-Ferrous Wire Drawing

Diamond dies are used for non-ferrous materials including copper and aluminum. Natural and synthetic single-crystal diamond dies are also used for certain precious-metal and semiconductor-related wire applications.

Applications

Diamond Wire Drawing Dies are used for different wire products depending on the selected diamond material and die geometry.

Copper Wire

Used in electrical conductor and fine copper wire production.

01

Aluminum Wire

Used in conductor and other aluminum wire drawing processes.

02

Precious-Metal Wire

Natural and synthetic single-crystal diamond dies can be used for fine gold and other precious-metal wires.

03

Fine and Ultra-Fine Wire

Single-crystal diamond dies are used in applications where the wire diameter and surface condition require a finished diamond bore.

04

Shaped Wire

Diamond working elements can also be used in shaped or formed wire dies when a non-round cross-section is required. Diamond die manufacturers offer PCD and single-crystal configurations for shaped profiles.

Diamond Wire Drawing Process

A typical production sequence is:

Wire Preparation → Die Installation → Lubrication → Drawing Pass → Dimension Inspection → Surface Inspection → Next Pass

Wire Preparation

The incoming wire is prepared to remove surface contamination that could affect the drawing interface.

Die Installation

The die is positioned in the die holder and aligned with the wire path.

Lubrication

Dry or wet lubrication is established according to the production process.

Drawing

The wire is pulled through the diamond bore. The reduction zone changes the cross-sectional area and the bearing section establishes the output dimension.

Inspection

The drawn wire is checked for the dimensions and surface characteristics specified for the product.

Subsequent Passes

For multi-pass production, the wire continues through the remaining dies until the target diameter or profile is reached.

What B2B Buyers Need to Specify

A request for a "diamond wire drawing die" should include more than the final wire diameter.
The following information is normally required:
Wire material and grade
Incoming diameter
Finished diameter
Drawing pass number
Reduction per pass
Drawing speed
Dry or wet drawing
Lubrication method
Required wire tolerance
Required surface condition
Existing die holder dimensions
Required diamond material: ND, SSCD or PCD

For shaped wire, a dimensioned cross-sectional drawing should also be provided.

Diamond Wire Drawing Die Replacement and Recuttability

Some diamond dies can be recut or resized after the working bore reaches the specified wear limit. Recutting services are available for both single-crystal and polycrystalline diamond dies, depending on die construction and remaining material.

For production planning, buyers should therefore confirm whether the selected die is intended for new manufacture, scheduled recutting or replacement, because this affects the required die specification and maintenance cycle.

Diamond Wire Drawing Die Selection

The correct diamond die should be selected from the combination of:

Wire Material + Wire Diameter + Reduction Schedule + Drawing Speed + Lubrication + Required Tolerance + Surface Requirement

The term "diamond die" only defines the working material category. The actual die specification must be determined from the drawing process and finished-wire requirements.
